You have selected the easiest and most convenient way for Jefferson County residents to renew their Alabama motor vehicle and boat registration. You can complete your renewal in a few simple steps.

To ensure proper completion of this transaction, the “pop-up” blocker must be disabled. Failure to do so may cause a five (5) day delay in processing your request.

  • The courtesy renewal reminder notice you received in the mail. Your renewal can only be renewed during or after your renewal month. We do not give out record numbers over the phone as the information shown during the process of renewal is protected by the Federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act 1994.

  • VISA®, MasterCard®, American Express®,and Discover® acceptedA valid VISA®, MasterCard®, American Express®, or Discover® credit card.  We also accept electronic checks.  If you choose this option, you will need to provide your bank routing number and your account number, as well as your mailing address.  We accept payments from personal checking, personal savings or corporate checking accounts.
  • Driver's License or non-driver identification number, issued by the State of Alabama Department of Public Safety or a Federal Employer Identification number (FEIN) for commercially owned vehicles.
  • Proof of insurance: effective January 1, 2013 the renewal process now includes mandatory liability insurance verification.

Notice to Credit Card and E-Check users:

Jefferson County does not charge a service fee for renewals paid by credit cards, debit cards or E-Check!!!

There is a $30.00 flat fee for any returned E-Checks

Only VISA®, MasterCard®, American Express®, and Discover® are accepted at this time.

* The two dollar ($2) mail fee per metal plate and/or registration decal is a separate charge and will appear on the motor vehicle registration receipt.

Express Lane allows you to renew and pay for up to ten (10) registration renewals with a single credit card transaction. You will need to have tag and record numbers for each vehicle ready before you begin.

Your tag/decal will be mailed to the address shown on your renewal reminder.

Renewing by mail? Provide the information requested - along with your payment.

All mail orders must be received in this office no later than the 25th day of the renewal month. Please verify you provided the required information, signed the front of the notice, signed, dated, ensured the payment amounts match the amount of the tag renewal including mail fees, wrote the tag numbers of each tag being renewed, and made the check payable to Scott Moore, Director before mailing. Include a LEGIBLE copy of your driver’s license and that of the co-owner, if any, and copies of the insurance card for each vehicle. Please note that there is some risk involved in renewing by mail. If license plate or decal is lost in the mail you must apply for a replacement in person and a replacement fee of $2.25.
